THE BRISTOL MODERNIST AND SIXTIES WEEKENDER 2023
Friday 28th April to Sunday 30th April (Monday is a bank holiday)
‘We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams, we are the movers and shakers of the world forever, it seems’ - Arthur 0’ Shaughnessy/Willy Wonka.
Suit Yourself Modernist Culture are very proud to bring you the annual Bristol Modernist and sixties weekender 2023, a weekend full of sharp dressing, cool dancing, scooter cruising, hip shaking action in the south west’s coolest city.
In this, our 4th in the series not only are we celebrating all things Mod we are also giving thanks to the city which hosts our incredible weekend. Bristol, a city, steeped in history, culture and musical heritage. The birth place of greats including Carey Grant and Darth Vader and graffiti legend Banksy, the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Britain and Clifton suspension bridge, the international balloon fiesta, the Concorde, Cabot’s ship – The Matthew, castles, restaurants, bars, museums and of course the wonderful night life.
Bristol is undoubtedly one of the coolest cities in the UK. It’s diverse, vibrant, multi-cultural values can be felt everywhere, it’s been voted ‘Best place to live in Britain’ an incredible 3 times in the last 5 years! It’s beautiful Georgian architecture rubs shoulders with its unique Byzantine style buildings of Moorish descent. The stunning structures from the Regency, Victorian and modernist periods sit in the shadow of one of the UK’s greatest engineering achievements, Brunel’s Clifton Suspension bridge which spans across the Bristol gorge where ships and boats of all sizes sail in and out of the city’s huge floating harbour. Visitors to the city love the historic docks with its restaurants, bars and coffee houses whilst others marvel in its museums and floating masterpieces including the awe inspiring SS Great Britain which was built in the city in 1843 and is housed permanently in the harbour for visitors to revel in all her glory.
There are many reasons Bristol attracts visitors during the day, whether to walk the Banksy trail, spend an afternoon basking in the splendor of Ashton Court mansion or gaze in wonder in the famous Bristol aquarium but as the sun goes down it’s the nightlife which gives the city it’s true heartbeat as it comes alive with the sound of throbbing baselines, hip bars and very cool clubs.
Nestled amongst Bristol’s finest musical establishments are our three venues which will play host to the pulse of our own rhythm and soul, The Louisiana, famous for its live acts and helping spurn the careers of bands such as The Super Furry animals, Placebo, The Chemical brothers, The Scissor sisters, Florence and the machine, Muse and Coldplay.
Basement 45, a firm weekender favourite with it’s Cavern like feel, cool décor and thumping sound system set in the centre of the city’s hustle and bustle and our newest home for 2023 – Totos by the river, an expansive multi levelled bar with a huge terrace which overlooks the harbour and the lights of the big city. Each venue unique in its own way will play a key part in making your weekend in Bristol super special.
In 2023 we will be bringing together some of the scene’s finest live music acts and DJ’s to play in these cool venues, from the uber-fab latin funk hustlers The Bongolian and the massive rhythm shakers of Original Gravity’s The Labrats to a very special evening performance by soulful legend Nick Corbin overlooking Bristol’s iconic harbour, each artist and venue has been carefully selected to bring you an exceptional experience in Bristol.
Of course, we couldn’t host a weekender with these incredible bands without the musical accompaniment of their counterparts and in standing with tradition we have secured some of the biggest movers and shakers within the scene, the DJ’s who themselves have delivered time and time again across various dancefloors ensuring no one will leave without dancing to a toe tapping delight or two. So without further ado we are very proud to bring you…
