In The Crowd – 40th Anniversary Edition

Published March 2022

Following the publication last year of their hugely successful, definitive book on the Style Council,Soul Deep (“probably the best  book on The Style Council in the world…a lovely piece of work!,” Paul Weller), are proud to announce a 40th anniversary edition of Derek D’Souza's sought-after In The Crowd, which has been out of print for almost 10 years!

Photographer Derek D’Souza shot one of Britain’s best loved and most iconic bands, The Jam at the height of their fame, back in August 1981. What makes this remarkable was that he was given the chance by the band to shoot for a single even though he had no real photographic experience. Ironically the single was called ‘Absolute Beginners’.

The Jam enriched many lives with their unique brand of fire and skill and in Derek’s case, changed the course of his too...

Forward to 2013 and Derek released a photographic book ‘In The Crowd’ featuring images of the famous Chiswick Park session alongside his photos of the Woking three-piece taken live from the audience perspective. Not down the front, from the safety of the pit but literally in the crowd, with a smuggled in camera and lens!

‘In The Crowd’ has been long out of print and with the discovery of new and unseen photos of the band, the team behind the stunning Style Council book Soul Deep, have teamed up with Derek to produce a beautiful limited high-quality 40th edition hardback book for release in March 2022.
